02/22/2005 - Tarentum - Fatal Structure
Fire
Summit Street
Shortly after 2am, Highland Hose Station 280,
Eureka Hose Station 281 and Summit Hose Station 282 were dispatched for a possible
structure fire with entrapment on Summit Street in Tarentum. First arriving crews
reported heavy smoke and flames visible from two blocks away. At the scene, crews
found a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure fully involved.
Crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames. Despite exposures on either side
of the structure being only a few feet away, damage to those buildings was minimal.
Overhaul crews found the bodies of three victims who perished in the fire. According
to the Allegheny County Fire Marshall's Office, the fire appears to have started
with food cooking on the stove unattended. Pioneer Hose Station 112 and Hilltop
Hose Station 168 assisted. Most crews were back in service by 3:30am.
