Beginning of a Fire - Part 8

By: Nick Markowitz Jr.
Fire Investigator – Electrical Contractor

One of my customers in Irwin, PA called me to tell me during a recent thunderstorm there was a loud crack outside and he lost most of the electronics in his home. He thought lightning had hit close. I arrived to find just how close it hit. Scattered in his driveway were the remnants of a cerraic cased lightning arrestor which is attached to electric power transformers which looks like a small insulator approx 12" long and 3" thick. Luckily the arrestor took the brunt of the hit and exploded saving my customers home from a fire. Allegheny Power was called and the crew arrived quickly and could not believe their eyes what had happened.
