Fdnv Named Nvt's Official Department
Posted on Friday, September 19, 2008 11:36 AM FF184
By MICHAEL DIVITTORIO, Daily News Staff Writer

North Versailles Township officially has one fire department.

By a 4-3 vote Thursday, commissioners designated the Fire Department of North Versailles as the township's official fire department .

Voting in favor were commission President Dennis Dull, Vice President Bryan Dull, Ruth Grimes and Sean McGuire. Opposed were Kash Snyder, George Beswick and Frank Bivins.

The decision officially cuts West Wilmerding Volunteer Fire Department and Crestas Volunteer Fire Co. out of the township's budget.

Commissioners enacted a half-mill fire tax last year, with $40,000 going to FDNV, and $20,000 each to Crestas and West Wilmerding.

Dennis Dull said FDNV will get "a high percentage" of the other departments' funds, and the rest will be used to help pay off a bond that was used to purchase fire vehicles and items for the township's fire marshal.

Commissioners said Crestas and West Wilmerding showed a lack of willingness to comply with a firefighters policy implemented this year, which establishes training minimums for the township.

"We came up with a policy, and they did not want to comply with the policy," Grimes said.

"They just didn't want to conform with the policy, for who knows what reason?" the president said.

Dennis Dull said about four West Wilmerding firefighters have joined FDNV, but no one from Crestas has crossed over.

Since July, the West Wilmerding and Crestas departments have not been dispatched for township emergency calls.

Snyder said he voted against eliminating Crestas and West Wilmerding from the budget because of a conference in front of an Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas motion judge is set for 9 this morning between township Solicitor Bonnie Brimmeier and an attorney for Crestas.

Snyder noted that Crestas has filed an injunction to be put back on the township's dispatch, and he wanted to hold off on making a decision until after the conference.

"This is going in front of a judge to decide," Snyder said. "This is going to court tomorrow. Why would we vote on it tonight?"

A fire that destroyed an abandoned Jeannette row house early Friday morning was arson, fire officials said.

"Someone lit them. It was an arson," said Jeannette fire Chief Mike Bertolino. "There's no power, no gas, no nothing to it."

The fire in the 600 block of Chambers Avenue was reported at 5:32 a.m. Bertolino said fire crews took more than two hours to extinguish the flames that engulfed the brick veneer and wood-frame structure.

No injuries were reported.

Bertolino said the two-story row house containing 10 units was vacant for several years. It is in foreclosure, he added.

Because the large structure was empty, the fire department had a plan in place in case of a fire.

Firefighters did not enter the structure. Instead, they simply protected the exposure to other buildings and let the fire run its course.

State police fire investigators are conducting an arson investigation, which will be turned over to Jeannette police, Bertolino said.

The structure was demolished after the fire was extinguished, Bertolino said.

Officials will contact the bank that foreclosed on the building to get the company to clean up the debris, he said.

Elderly Woman Injured In Beltzhoover Fire
Posted on Saturday, August 30, 2008 08:53 PM FF184
By The Tribune-Review

A blaze gutted the top floor of a Beltzhoover home this morning and sent an elderly widow inside to Mercy Hospital for treatment of extensive burns and smoke inhalation injuries.

Authorities believe the fire erupted around 9:30 a.m. in a rear, second floor room of the 238 Chalfont St. home of Florence A. Miller, 87, sending six companies from Pittsburgh's Fire Bureau to quench it.

"The first ones in found a lady in the hallway. They carried her out and then got the fire out," said Fourth District Fire Chief Frank Becker.

Becker estimated the damage at $30,000 for the building and $10,000 for Miller's belongings. Fire investigators are probing the cause.

An ambulance sped Miller to the hospital, where she was listed Saturday afternoon in critical condition, according to Pittsburgh paramedics.
