Vehicle Accident - City of Pittsburgh (8/6/2003)
On Wednesday, August 6, 2003 shortly after 10:00a.m.
City of Pittsburgh EOC dispatched Zone 4 police, paramedics, a rescue unit and
30Engine, to Greentree Road, on the bend just up from Woodville, for a vehicle
accident head-on collision involving an SUV and a PAT bus, with reported injuries
and entrapment. First arriving units reported a Jeep Cherokee head-on impact
into a PAT bus, heavy damage to the Jeep, with a 19-year-old female operator
of the Jeep in traumatic arrest. The female operator of the Jeep was pronounced
dead. According to the report, the female's heart exploded approximately 60 seconds
after impact. There was no way to save her. The bus driver was transported to
Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. The bus driver told officials, "that
the operator of the Jeep was looking down, that either she had fallen asleep,
or she was looking for something. The Jeep crossed the center line into his path,
he tried to stop but was unable to." City of Pittsburgh Police Accident
Investigation Unit and Port Authority Police Accident Investigation Unit are
conducting a joint investigation into the fatal crash. Investigators are also
awaiting results of toxicology tests.
